At what age should you start sailing? A guide for parents in the Alpes-Maritimes region.

Does your child gaze at sailboats with stars in their eyes, and you wonder if they're old enough to take the plunge? Good news: sailing can be learned very early, provided you choose the right boat and the right program. At the CVM Nautical Center in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat , the Club Var Mer welcomes children from the age of 6. Here's everything you need to know to enroll your child at the right time.

Sailing: From what age? The short answer
In a sailing school affiliated with the French Sailing Federation, the most common starting age is 6 years old . This is the age at which a child generally has enough coordination to hold a tiller and a sheet, and enough autonomy to sail alone on a small boat supervised by an instructor.
At Club Var Mer, progression follows age and skill level:
6 to 10 years old: Optimist, the introductory dinghy.
From age 10 onwards, summer internship: multi-support, to discover several boats.
From age 11: RS Cat 14 catamaran, designed for young sailors.
From age 18: Hobie Cat 16 catamaran, more sporty.
From 6 to 10 years old: the Optimist, the boat for first sailing trips
The Optimist is the perfect training boat. Small, stable, and easy to maneuver, it allows children to steer on their own from the very first lessons . It's often this feeling of independence that sparks the learning curve: your child becomes the captain of their own boat.
At this age, learning happens through play. Instructors offer fun exercises to understand the wind, learn to tack, and gain confidence on the water. To guarantee safety and attentive supervision, the club maintains a ratio of one instructor for every 10 children aged 6 to 10 .
From age 10 or 11: time for the catamaran
Around age 10 or 11, children have gained strength and confidence. It's the perfect time to take things to the next level. During summer camps, the multi-sailing program for ages 10 and up allows them to try out several different boats. Year-round courses, such as the RS Cat 14 for ages 11 and up, offer exhilarating sailing experiences while remaining accessible. This adaptable catamaran guides teenagers from beginner to competitive level.
The ratio then changes to one monitor for 15 young people aged 11 to 15 , adapted to more independent sailors.
And what about children under 6?
Is your child still too young to sail an Optimist dinghy? They can still discover the sea with you. Renting a pedal boat allows for a family outing without a license or prior experience, and adiscovery tour is a lovely way to share a first moment on the water. Family paddleboard yoga , with an adult, is also available upon request year-round.
How to prepare your child for their first session
A few points to check before the first day:
Comfort in the water. Your child must be comfortable in the water. A life jacket is worn at every session, but a child who feels at ease in the water enjoys the activity much more. The office can provide you with further details regarding the requirements.
Documents. For a training course, please provide the FFV health questionnaire and the Sailing Passport (€14) if your child is not already licensed.
Equipment. Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are essential in all seasons. Outside of summer, a wetsuit and booties are indispensable for staying warm while sailing.
Motivation. Talk to him about what he's going to experience rather than reassuring him about what might scare him. Most children forget their apprehension as soon as they reach the edge.
Internship or year-long course: which option to choose?
The course, for discovery. Ideal for a first experience, the course takes place over 5 half-days, either morning or afternoon. The club organizes them during the summer (from €200 for 5 half-days) and during the All Saints', winter, and spring school holidays in Optimist and catamaran dinghies.
Year-long courses, to help you progress.
Did your child enjoy it? The annual sailing courses offer 34 sessions on Saturdays, from September to June. Same instructor, same classmates, same sailing area: it's consistency that really leads to progress. Children sail on Saturday mornings, adults on Saturday afternoons.
A tip: start with a holiday camp, then enroll your child for the year if they want to do it again.
